Though you may recognize Detroit as the American motor capital of the world, Middle Eastern conflicts have given our church a unique opportunity to minister to and serve refugees in this area. Major economic downturn, corruption and crime have forced the city down to third world levels. In the middle of this city lies a predominantly Muslim immigrant community called Hamtramck, which has been called “the world in two square miles.” In the last six months, more than 1,600 Syrian refugees have resettled in this area, making it one of the most concentrated populations of refugees from the Middle East in our nation. Interns will have the opportunity to teach ESL classes, serving in women’s gyms and safe houses, develop urban agriculture and run sports camps. If you’re looking for a place to impact refugees in your home nation, consider joining the team in Detroit this summer.
